Cinema Showings Questions and Answers

Voting Question: Twilight triple feature..?

A while ago I got two tickets for Eclipse at regal cinema. The first two midnight showings were sold out so I got the 12:03 show. I then found out that they are playing Twilight and New Moon that night before Eclipse. It starts at 6:30. I just got tickets. I'm just worried that since I don't have the 12:01am show I'll have to go out and get back in line for eclipse and I'm afraid that we will get bad seats. it's only my sister and I though so its not like we have to find a lot of seats. I'm just wondering what I should do so we don't get bad seats? and how early should we get to the movie theater, do you think a lot of people will be going to Twilight and New Moon too ? thanks everyone  more

Resolved Question: Brooklyn's Finest - UK Release?

Hey guys, just wondered if anybody knew when this film was released in the UK - There's no date on IMDB and I've seen no adverts for it in town, on tv or on the internet. I only came across it by fluke (again on IMDB) and now it turns out it's in my local cinema but only with 3 showings per week. What's the deal with the lack of marketing - how long has the film been out here, and what did people think of it? By release I mean original release date in UK Cinemas.  more

Resolved Question: will you stop going to the movies?

I already have gone less to the movies throughout the last few years because of price hikes...I think i may be done after this (Credit Wall Street Journal for this article). Major U.S. movie-theater chains, seeking to accelerate the surge in revenues fueled by such 3-D hits as "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland," are imposing some of the steepest increases in ticket prices in at least a decade. The new prices take effect Friday in many markets across the country in theaters owned by such major exhibitors as Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark Holdings Inc. and AMC Entertainment Inc. More from WSJ.com: • 3-D Powered Box Office Surge • Did the Academy Awards Kill the 'Oscar Bump'? • James Cameron on the Coming DVD Release of 'Avatar' The increases, in one case as much as 26%, vary from theater to theater, but many cinemas are raising prices most—or even solely—for 3-D showings, which accounted for the vast majority of last year's 10% jump in domestic box-office sales. 3-D movies generated 11% of domestic ticket sales in 2009, up from just 2% in 2008. At an AMC theater in Danvers, Mass., a Boston suburb, 3-D ticket prices are jumping more than 20% to $17.50 from $14.50, while the adult admission price for a conventional film will remain at $10.50. At one Seattle multiplex, adult admission is rising to $11 from $10 for a conventional film, to $15 from $13.50 for a regular 3-D showing and to $17 from $15 for Imax 3-D. A 3-D Imax movie at New York City's AMC Loews Kips Bay will cost $19.50, up from $16.50. The increases weren't announced by the theater operators, but were reflected in prices posted Wednesday on movie-ticketing Web sites, such as Fandango.com. AMC and Cinemark declined to comment. Comment from Regal wasn't immediately available. Popular Stories on Yahoo! • Rock Stars' Financial Blunders Revealed • How to Tell if You're Middle-Class • Tracking Down Your Tax Refund More from Yahoo! Finance The industry's move comes on the heels of a record-setting year at the domestic box office, with revenue surpassing $10 billion for the first time. Movie attendance in the U.S. and Canada grew 5.5% in 2009, with 1.42 billion tickets sold, the most since 2004. Ticket sales so far this year are running 10% higher. Movie theaters typically charged $2 to $3 extra for 3-D movies. But the brisk demand for the premium-priced tickets led many exhibitors to conclude they were still underpriced. About 83% of the record $2.6 billion in ticket sales for "Avatar" came from 3-D and Imax screens. And Walt Disney Co.'s "Alice in Wonderland" also set records when it hit 3-D screens earlier this month. While the new prices could boost theater owners' already buoyant revenues, some industry watchers think they could also spark a consumer backlash. Studios, theater operators, and trade groups have long touted films as a bargain, compared with other forms of entertainment. A decade ago, the average ticket at a multiplex was $5.39, but prices have edged up between 2.7% and 6.1% a year since then, according to the Motion Picture Association of America. "The U.S. economy isn't in the greatest shape, and there is definitely risk here in pushing price too far in a weak economy," said Richard Greenfield, a media analyst at BTIG LLC, who issued a research report Wednesday on the price hikes. Mr. Greenfield said the next month will serve as a test of the strategy. "We'll have a sense if there is any pushback" from moviegoers, he said. Some movie-studio executives expressed concern that the price increases might be too much too soon. "The risk we run is that we will no longer be the value proposition that we as an industry have prided ourselves on," said a distribution executive at one major studio. Other studio executives agreed that the move was risky, but some, like Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros., expressed support. "The exhibitors are trying to push the needle on ticket prices and see where it ends up," Mr. Fellman said. "So far charging a $3 or $4 premium has had no effect on consumers whatsoever, so I'm in favor of this experiment to raise prices even more. There may be additional revenue to earn here." Studios are also in a bind. While many are wary of appearing to gouge consumers, they are also facing higher costs as they produce more movies in the technology-heavy 3-D format. Though ticket prices are set by theater operators, the proceeds are split roughly 50-50 with movie studios. Five major 3-D films are opening in theaters over the next three months, starting this weekend with DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc.'s "How to Train Your Dragon." That rich selection is one reason theater owners chose to raise 3-D ticket prices now. It may also help set consumers' expectations for future 3- films. Imax 3-D tickets to "Dragon" are expected to cost an average $1, or 7%, more than Imax tickets to Disney's "A Christmas C  more

Voting Question: how can we boycott movie theaters for hiking prices?

The increases, in one case as much as 26%, vary from theater to theater, but many cinemas are raising prices most—or even solely—for 3-D showings, which accounted for the vast majority of last year's 10% jump in domestic box-office sales. One of the biggest price increases was at an AMC theater in Boston, where a child's 3-D Imax ticket will cost $14.50, up from $11.50. In the 10 markets he surveyed, adult tickets to conventional 2-D films were set to rise by an average of 4%, beginning this weekend. 15$ for a conventional film. I call it price gouging. This is going into effect everywhere.  more

Resolved Question: Best time to watch New Moon (Twilight) to avoid screeming?

I know the movie is coming out in November. I didn't see the first one in the cinema, I only recently saw it on DVD. I liked it a lot and I like the books too. So here is my question: I want to see New Moon in the cinema, but I would like to avoid the screeming, the "aw", "oooh" and etc. that I heard accompanies the Twilight showings. What's the best time to go (I grasp that it's probably not during the opening weekend)? Morning? Afternoon? Weekday? And how bad does it really get? Is it possible to watch this movie in a cinema with a normal quiet atmosphere?  more

Resolved Question: isn't this just rude beyond belief?

yesterday I went to the cinema, to watch a wonderful movie about my hero henry viii and when I sat down people had the nerve to complain about my crown being in the way, then after that, I was watching henry and cheering him on "go henry you wonderful man, chop those wives heads offeth!" I shouted, and some buffoon in the cinema had said "will you shut up" so I arose and said "listen here my boy, if thou ever speak to me that way again the consequences will be bad for you" and he had the nerve to threaten to get security to remove me, then other members of the audience shouted at me "sit down I can't see the movie!" I replied "how dareth thou?" and they threw popcorn at me, I say throwing food is such a commoners thing to do! by this time I had finally had enough and decided to talk to the manager, and I demanded he remove the offending people, but he said no, and what's more as I went inside I realised the movie was not paused for me, how rude! I say because of this ordeal I am thinking o passing a new law that only royal and upper class people may attend film showings in dorskville from now on! unfortunately one of the maids didn't clean my private cinema effectively enough so one had to go to a public one old chap, I highly regret it now  more

Resolved Question: Does Anyone Else Think Cinema Prices Are Too Expensive Nowadays (UK)?

I was a bit surprised the other day when my local Odeon's cheapest ticket was £7.00 Does this strike anyone else as being a bit much. Its not criminally expensive or a 'rip-off' but it seems that increasingly we're being charged more for films that are just sequels or remakes. My local cinema used to do cut priced matinee showings or double features. But that's gone now and everyone has to pay at least £7.00 whenever you go. Also many cinemas now charge an extra handling fee onto the ticket if you pre-book it. What brings it into context is looking online. It costs 7 quid to watch a movie, but looking at play.com I can own really recent movies cheaper than that. 'The Departed'- came out in cinemas 9 months ago, but you can buy the 2 Disc DVD for £6.99 Surely that shows up how absurd it is! 'The Prestige'- A great movie well under 12 months old, £5.99 on DVD 'Pan's Labyrinth'- One of the best movies in recent times. 9 months old but £5.99 on DVD. The really annoying thing is that movie companies have the cheek to criticise people for downloading movies illegally. These people are not doing it because they're bad people, they'd prefer to see the movie at the cinema instead of a small computer screen, it's just that they're being charged an unfair price. If you ask me £5.50 is a fair price for cheapest seats and £7.00 for deluxe seats.  more

Resolved Question: Anyone else disappointed with the simpsons movie?

I mean it was quite funny (and I am a fan) but i felt that the best bits were the ones that were advertised on the tv and on other film showings at the cinema and there wasnt much in the way of other footage which made me laugh. It was ok. Went to watch it with my hubby. Kids want to go now but I am gonna get someone else to go with them cos i'm not bothered about seeing it again... I think that after nearly 17 yrs of shows they must be running out of footage now!  more

Resolved Question: Where can I find out about cinema showings of The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D in the UK?

I know it's on at Leicester Square for one night only, but that's no good to most of the country (we can't ALL go there on the same night!) Dang! According to the website mentioned in the first answer I got, it's not showing anywhere near me. Not sure it's really worth travelling 100 miles to see :-( Hmm, I'm not convinced that website postcode finder really works, according to it there are no places (major cities) showing the film across the UK on the 1st od December... very perculiar!  more
