I recently became very fascinated with British cinema. My favorite so far is " In Bruges". I like drama and thriller. moreResolved Question: American who really loves British culture?
I am an American but I associate strongly with Britain and I have always loved Britain in general. Music is probably what I like most about it (about 75% of the music I listen to is British). I love British cinema and comedy in general. I genuinely find Monty Python funny as well as many British comedians and movies. Most of my favourite writers and poets are also British, such as George Orwell. You also might've noticed that I prefer most British spelling over American ones, such as flavour, colour, doughnut, and favourite. I also love British accents and I seem to be the only person I know who can differentiate between an accent from Scotland to Ireland to Australia to Wales to Great Britain and so on. Is it unusual to love the country like I do? I also have a love for Germany and German culture but much less so than Britain. I never said Scotland and Wales are not a part of Great Britain. Note I said "Britain" and not "Great Britain" I made a simple mistake, is it that necessary to point out? I clearly meant England and not Great Britain. moreResolved Question: Is it Theatre or Theater?
A friend and I had an argument about which it was. I've always believed that theatre was the general British spelling, referring to both Cinemas and actual theatres (for plays, musicals, etc). And that theater is the American spelling and referring to Cinemas only with theatre as a choice, usually for plays and the like. How is it used? -Thanks. So I want to watch the British film Nowhere Boy. I live in Sydney, and I've checked two cinemas that are in my area, and neither of them are showing it. My friend got it pirated from Indonesia, but I hate them because they're such bad quality! So is there a cinema that you know of that shows Nowhere Boy, Sydney-siders? By the way, I'm 13 years old (don't think I'm immature, I swear rather dangerously) and I want to know if there are REALLY explicit scenes? I don't mind them, but if I'm planning to bring a friend, they may not like it. I don't mind swearing and stuff (all good movies have it) though. So what's it rated? M or MA15+? Thanks! moreResolved Question: Dear people from the UK, how is the life in an island?
I have always felt a great admiration and devotion to british culture, your music, rock, art, cinema, literature, and all related with the life in the UK seems fascinating to me (I am mexican), but I have always had a doubt regarded with your lifestyle: How do you feel to live in an island country? It is difficult to live isolated (just for say something, I cannot find the correct meaning) in an island? It is something that make even more special all the magic regarded with your immense culture and all british legacy? I hope maybe some of you can answer my difficult question? Regards, hugs from Mexico and thank you for The Beatles, Iron Maiden, Shakespeare, Harry Potter, Issac Newton..... moreVoting Question: From Italy, looking for Postgraduate courses in UK (London would be great). Need help!?
Hello everyone, I am 24 years old and have a degree in Foreign languages from Parma University, Italy. English has always been my subject of interest. I was an Erasmus student in Cardiff for one semester back in 2006/2007 and had a great time there experiencing the British college life. I have just taken the TOEFL iBt and got a 106 score, so now I am looking for a good postgraduate course in the UK. I can't decide on the area, since I am interested in several career opportunities: I love cinema and English literature: I wouldn't mind being a translator/interpreter and work in the field of Screen Translation or Translation for Literature. I also like writing and travelling, that makes journalism an option too. I did several researches on the internet, and I found a couple of interesting but need the opinion of someone who actually lives and studies in the UK, and most of all who knows which are the best Universities/courses. Thank you very much! PS: I know London is much more expensive compared to other cities, and that scares me a bit.. but living in London has been a dream for a long time, and I am fascinated by the cultural/social life that I could find there, that makes London my number 1 (althought I am not refusing other options). Hello Brian, great piece of advice! The link you sent me is not working though! Can you check for the right adress? Thank you! http://www.ace-ed.org.uk/ I found this, but I don't think that's the site you were talking about moreResolved Question: why do so few british cinemas give you butter for your popcorn?
Iain: what cinema or chain do you work for? Anyway I have to admit to buying a diet coke with a big box of popcorn (unbuttered because none of my locals do butter). There can be 500 calories in a xl coke! and it all adds up (i am not fat) moreResolved Question: How can I get my girlfriend's dad to accept me?
I am 19 and my girlfriend is 20. We've been going out now for 4 months and everything really is fantastic, other than the fact that her dad would never let her go out with me (if he knew). My girlfriend is Turkish but English is her first language and she has lived here most of her life, her younger brother is the same and her mum also lived most of her childhood in the UK. Her dad, however, did not move away from Turkey until he was about 30 and grew up in a Turkish village so my girlfriend says he is very typically Turkish (unlike her mum and brother). I have been to my girlfriend's house on several occasions but only when her dad isn't home (he owns a take-away shop so works every day until the early hours of the morning meaning that I am able to go to her house in the evenings). I have met her mum and her brother and spent time with them watching TV and even went to a football game and the cinema with my girlfriend and her brother. Her mum and her brother both like me and I'm completely comfortable around them and they both are happy with their daughter and sister dating me. Her dad, however, is completely different. my girlfriend has told me that he has told her that he doesn't want her to get a British boyfriend and that while he understands that seeing as they are living in the UK for at least 4 years (whilst she is at uni here) she will go on dates, he doesn't want to know about it and he doesn't want her in a serious relationship. This, recently, has started to affect me a bit, I just wish that if her dad ever knew about us that he would not bother about what nationality I am (surely that counts as racism?) and just see that I'm a nice guy and that his daughter is happy. I'm hoping that if it eventually does get revealed that the fact that her mum and brother both quite like me will play in favour. Until then what can I do? Is there anything I can do or say to my girlfriend that would support her because this is bothering her a little bit too. I need to do a footnote/endnote and bibliography for this: Annette Kuhn, “The Classic Narrative System,” in Pam Cook, ed., The Cinema Book (London: British Film Institute, 1985), pp. 212-15. It's a book with one author and it's an article taken out of the book. I don't know how to arrange it in Chicago Style Turabian citation. Please show me how to do the endnote/bibliography for it. I know you can't use underline/italics, so please tell me where to put them. or if you could show me a link where they show how to do this (but I haven't seen any online including the article title " "), it would be greatly appreciated. moreResolved Question: A new Polanski offering; just seen a write-up for his latest film (in cinemas Apr. 16). Tend to wait for such films to arrive on the screen nowadays - but will hand over dinero to get a ticket in it's first showing up the West End, as I eagerly did many years ago for Richard Wagner's (yes...he who's views might have influenced Nazi thinking) brilliant recording of 'Parsifal' (Pierre Boulez/Bayreuth Festival Orchestra 1970), with Thomas Stewart, Karl Ridderbusch, Franz Crass, James King, Donald McIntyre, Gwyneth Jones, and Marga Höffgen. Their music is often described as power pop, with some critics likening their sound to that of Cheap Trick. The band has released four albums to date: Mass Romantic (2000), Electric Version (2003), Twin Cinema (2005), and Challengers (2007). A live album recorded on their 2006 tour is available only at concerts and on the band's website. The band's first three albums each ranked in the top 40 on The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop year-end poll of hundreds of music reviewers. From 2000 to 2006, either a New Pornographers' album or a solo album from one of the band's members ranked in the top 40 on the list each year. In 2007, Blender magazine ranked The New Pornographers' first album, Mass Romantic, the 24th best indie album of all time, the second-highest Canadian album on the list. In 2009, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the band's second studio album, Electric Version, #79 in the "100 Best Albums of the Decade". I know this is somewhat of an immature question, but I'm just curious to find out exactly how accurate/inaccurate my preconceptions of my "likability" or sex appeal really are. I am slightly above average neurotic and self-conscious, and my self-esteem is pretty low right now, so I figured I'd ask this question. Okay, the following is literally taken off of my INFO tab on my personal Facebook account. Here goes: Relationship Status: Single Interested In: Women Political Views: Independent Religious Views: It's all the same God seen differently through different eyes. Personal Information Activities: School and work, songwriting, political activism, love, alcoholism from a lack thereof, reading books/novels, creative writing, philosophizing about reality and solving problems with society in my mind. Interests: Learning, loving, making music to inspire, connecting, thinking, political debate, coffee, Red Bull, chillaxation, meditation, vacations, stand-up comedy, free movies @ Regal Cinemas; ), Roller Coasters, jogging when I have the time/will-power, answering questions on Yahoo Answers, listening to dusty old records from my collection, going record shopping, waxing on as well as waxing off, etc, etc... Favorite Music: Anything "blues-based", like acid rock of the late 60s, Classic Rock of the 1970s, grunge/most 90's music, retro/garage rock, Southern Rock,Bluegrass, funk, soul, ska, Reggae, the original punk rock (late 70s early 80s), some if not most of the punk rock rivial of the 1990's,british pop rock of the 1960s and otherwise, some "metal" such as system of a down, nin (actually industrial grunge in my opinion),Meshugah, Rob Zombie, or rage against the machine, some rap such as cypress hill, wutang clan (preferably old school when rap was still by the people for the people)... I'm kinda picky about what I put into my stereo/put onto my turn-table...wouldn't want to waste a perfectly good pair of speakers/eardrums! What I like more than any particular genre is any song that tells a good story with a good riff and/or a good rythmn (ie beat)... Favorite TV Shows: I mostly try not to waste my life away with television, but when I do, I tend to watch cable news programs, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart/ the colbert report, Weeds, Breaking Bad, whatev I can find while channel surfing that isn't broadcasting sexually devious and mindless propaganda (ie commercials)... Favorite Movies: Any flicks by Quentin Tarantino, Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton, Kevin Smith, StarWars, good horror flicks (not slasher), crazy films that mess with your head like The Science of Sleep, ect. Also, Jim Carey flicks, good horror movies, and classic action/adventure movies such as Indianna Jones and Back to the Future...However, I also tend to like any movie that has a cult following. Favorite Books: The Art Of Happiness by the Dali Lama, which helped me to find enjoyment from every aspect of life, High Fidelity & Songbook...both by Nick Hornby, absolutely hilarious for any fan of music, Contact by Carl Sagan, a very deep philosophical and thought provoking adventure with themes such as the existance of extraterrestrials and God, The Torah by God, Aliens, or someone posing as God, a very biased approach at explaining why we exist, nevertheless still important in its ancient and widely accepted ideals, Cool Gardens by Serg Tankian, poetry for freethinkers, Dreams From My Father by President Barack Obama, a book that got me off of drugs and back into school, Stephen King's The Stand, Social Intelligence, the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling, selfexplannatory if you are a fan-if you aren't than you wouldn't understand anyway, a book called Zen Guitar that I don't remember the author's name, it helped me to "relearn" how to creatively make music without the use of drugs-as well as getting in touch with your inner imagination, Kurt Cobain Journals, tragic but fascinating, and I'm sure there are more... Favorite Quotations: "If there are a number of explanations for observed phenomena, the simplest explanation is preferred." -Occam's Razor "The leaves fall, fall as from afar... They fall with slow and lingering descent. And in the nights the heavy Earth, too, falls, From out the stars into the Solitude. Thus all must fall. This hand of mine must fall. But there is one who holds this falling, Infinitely softly in his hands..." -A passage from a Hebrew Prayer Book for Yom Kippur services [If you are reading this sentence, ] Thanks for reading all the way through! By the way, I did NOT "take the time to write all of this out" all at once! Are you crazy?! I add a little bit to it every now and then since I first created my account... I heard this song being used as a soundtrack to a trailer/advert in the cinema. The song is NOT Fashion by Lady Gaga, nor Labels or Love by Fergie, nor is it Humps by the Black Eyed Peas. It;s not by a black rapper either. The singer has a very clearly British accent, sounds upper class, and in the excerpt I heard she ran through a list of famous brand names. moreResolved Question: Whatever happened to the femme fatale? Sultry, smouldering temptresses lit up cinema golden age: what @ now?
Whatever happened to the femme fatale? Sultry, smouldering temptresses lit up the screen in cinema's golden age – but where are they now? Sheila Johnston pays tribute to the femme fatale Rita Hayworth in 'Gilda' (1946), a black-and-white film noir directed by Charles Vidor, in which Hayworth was a legendary ultimate femme fatale. They came prowling out of the shadows, wreathed in smoke, wisecracks and stolen mink; women no better than they should be, with only trouble in mind. They never needed to diet, displayed but a flickering interest in men for money, power and meaningless sex, and were more likely to accessorise with a gun than a Chihuahua. March saw a monster celebration of the femme fatale in all her guises. Screened as part of the Birds Eye View women's film festival, some 30 movies commemorated the vamp in silent cinema – the glorious likes of Louise Brooks and Theda Bara – and in later films up to today. A parallel event, at the BFI Mediatheque at QUAD, in Derby, highlights wicked ladies in British film and television in archive material that will be available to view indefinitely. The femme fatale had her greatest moment in the film noir of the Forties: it's claimed that she signified male fears of women liberated by their part in the war. The recent revival, via the Kill Bill & Charlie's Angels franchises, & a few odd vampiress movies, seems now to have faded? Will Power Girl comics launch a new wave of lethal ladies onto the screen?
